I think one of the cheapest for the points is the water towers, and they are all over, so rightly so.
“ 57. #YakkoWakkoAndDot – 25 pts – A water tower”
So, instead of the normal water towers in neighborhoods and small towns I choose for some rarities and old timers. I introduce you to the 3 Water Towers of St. Louis. 3 of seven left standing in the US. Built in the late 1800’s not to provide water, but to help regulate pressure with the steam pumps they had back in the day.

They don’t make them like they used to.

Thanks for posting those standpipes! The TL;DR version of how they work is the vertical pipe is 150’ high so that the water distribution system can have 50psi pressure in it and not spill out over the top of the standpipe. The extra freeboard between the height of the water and the top of the pipe acted like a snubber for pressure spikes. Back when these were built, the water pumps were positive displacement piston pumps that created large pressure fluctuations that these standpipes regulated.
Now a days, the same function is taken up by hydropnumatic tanks, where we can pressurize to get the snubbing effect without having to use 150’ of gravity. We’ve also gone to centrifugal pumps which don’t create the same pressure fluctuations as the old steam pumps, so the hydropnumatic tanks are usually only in the system for either pressurized storage or pressure surge protection from water hammer.

Well it would be interesting. They do tours of the Compton heights one, so I may have to do that.

My water tower will almost certainly be boring (on the plus( ?) side I can see it out my apartment window, so it will also be easy.
I did see a more distinctive one today, but didn’t stop since I figured I had something for that already:
There is fancy one more like your near where I went to college:

I miss the idea that industrial functions should be hidden by an ornate facade that one could take pride in. Now it is just built to be cheap. Absolutely stunning.
